Parisian women: they’ve got that joie de vivre, that je ne sais quoi – what can us Malaysian girls learn about their way of elegance?
“If there were no Frenchwomen, life wouldn’t be worth living,” German social scientist Friedrich Engels is supposed to have said – and we agree with him wholeheartedly, even if it’s for somewhat different reasons. If we had no French style icons to follow, then how would we be able to define the term ‘chic’? That’s not to say that Malaysian women can’t hold their own, but without that characteristic glamour that Parisian women, especially, are known for – the quick but artful chignon, the simple but ever-so-effective touch of red lipstick – what would we have to emulate?

Pick up a copy of our February issue to read the whole article.
It’s not simply an aesthetic approach to style that marks Parisian women out as some of the most stylish in the world, but the way they carry themselves and their attitudes towards living: open to and aware of all the pleasures that life in their city has to offer, but always in control.

Marina Mahathir speaks with Marie Claire about the launch of her new book, keeping people honest, and staying hopeful.

Forthright, unswervingly frank and never one to back down, Marina Mahathir speaks with Marie Claire about the launch of her new book, keeping people honest, and staying hopeful.
Let’s get one thing straight: Marina Mahathir does not mince her words. And frankly, what a good thing that is – it’s her direct, searing wit that’s kept the many readers of her fortnightly newspaper column, Musings, coming back for more over the 20 years she’s been writing. Standing in front of the camera, she looks entirely comfortable with a loudhailer in her hand, but Marina is hardly the sort who would have to shout to make herself heard. In fact, amid the cacophony of political and social discussion (if one can term it as such), the steadily reasoned arguments she puts forward in her writing have made the Malaysian public sit up and think – hard. The launch of her new book, Telling it Straight, a collection of selected pieces from Marina’s column – or in her words, “Think of it as a greatest hits album!” – provides a powerful, articulate discussion of the myriad of complex issues that affect Malaysia and its citizens. And while Marina’s thoughts in every piece are always accessible and clearly laid out, her pieces are by no means an easy read: she tackles censorship in the media, Islamic law enforcement, human trafficking, discrimination, corruption.

Pick up a copy of our November issue to read the whole article.
Sitting down to talk with her, it became even more evident that when Marina digs, she digs deep, however unpalatable or uncomfortable the truth. But never one to stop at just that, she also offers constructive, common-sense solutions, making forcefully effective arguments in favour of respecting diversity and the right to dissent – even if it challenges the powers that be. With Marina, the pen really does become mightier than the sword.

The art world is no stranger to the unusual, the eccentric and the downright bizarre – and when it comes to female-centric art, the more the better, says Renyi Lim.

Stained and rumpled bedsheets, public nudity and representation of female genitalia in as many mediums as you can imagine – you can call it obscene, lewd or twisted, but it`s still art as we know it. One only need mention Tracey Emin`s notorious My Bed, which was exhibited at The Tate in the late 90s and featured condoms, a pair of slippers and underwear stained with menstrual blood, to open a debate on what counts as art, and whether such pieces are acceptable or offensive in their raw, unpretty or naked forms. In the context of the treatment of the female body in art – when it isn`t desirable, neatly tucked away or in lithe, perfect form – British artist Jenny Saville`s paintings have gone a long way in throwing new, honest light on the imperfections of the female body, and making art from its perceived flaws in her large-scale depictions of naked women. Rather than shying away from what aesthetic norms deem “the grotesque”, she has focused on obese bodies, distorted flesh, and women bearing scars and contour lines from plastic surgery operations – a far cry from the toned, airbrushed figures we`re familiar with, unsettling us even further.

Pick up a copy of our November issue to read the whole article.
Such work of art or performance pieces might not be considered appropriate, the clash between art and public opinion of what counts as “appropriate” for public viewing can do much to highlight a society`s hang-ups over specific issues. Art has a way of pushing boundaries, challenging norms and provoking discussions wherever there has previously been silence. However, at the end of it all – if you don’t have the freedom to employ artistic expression within the perimeter of art, then where can you?
