Place VendÔme
Designed to resemble the geometrically-proportioned square where Coco Chanel resided for 37 years at a suite in the Ritz, the Chanel No. 5 flaçon and stopper were fashioned in a hexagonal, diamond-cut shape—envisioned by the couturier to discard meaningless ornamentation, sans fussiness or over-elaborate trimmings. Located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris to the north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Église de la Madeleine, Place Vendôme’s pedimented screens canted across its corners gave the square an octagonal aspect that played muse to the shape of the supremely iconic, phenomenal No. 5 bottle. The scent, concocted by Ernest Beaux to evoke the modern woman Mademoiselle Chanel epitomised, became an intervention in the history of perfume, the bottle itself morphing into an identifiable cultural relic in a coming together of architecture and haute couture; a fascinating piece of fashion history.

Rue Cambon
The most striking and original of the Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection, the 31 Rue Cambon fragrance captures the heart of Chanel: named after the apartment that Gabrielle kept as a couture workshop where she worked and entertained, the four floors recount the legend—the boutique, the haute couture salon, the private apartment and the design studio. Decked out with a bijoux chandelier that featured interlocking 5’s and C’s, and a mirrored spiral staircase that Coco had doused in Chanel No. 5, the unsurpassed decor smelled of opulence. A mirror panelled in Chinese lacquer mimics the shape of the Chanel No. 5 bottle and Place Vendôme (sited across the street from the apartment), intimately enveloping the entire world of Chanel in a historic nucleus of Chanel perfumes.

Try a little French flair and sizzling hair, skin and makeup to match that smokin’ hot look come Valentine’s Day.

Rouge It Up – French women eat red lipstick for breakfast, so when in need for something seductive, wear it and carry it off just as a Parisian dame would. Get the look right: a matte, red pout, jet black eyeliner and a natural shade of eyeshadow for the eyes, all set to pop against filled-in, brushed-up, thick eyebrows—the way to look French chic.

Décolletage – If you’ve got it, flaunt it. If you’re coming up a little flat, flaunt it even more. That’s the cleavage rule French women have got down pat, not a sign of tawdriness but what Parisiennes perceive as a display of the classical and youthful beauty of a woman. Slather on a matte bronzing powder (skip this if you’re well-endowed) and some curve-enhancing shimmery body oil.

Start with a hefty dose of volumising mousse to tease the top section of your hair and a curling iron to create large, undulating waves from the middle down. Tie that top section back and voilà—the sexpot cometh.

Ooh Là Là – Dramatic doll eyes with lashings of eyeliner and black eyeshadow are the new bedroom eyes, a classic French look that works every time (like the MAC Carine Roitfeld range that featured blacker-than-black kohl eyeliner). Top off the smokey eyes with a smidge of blusher, transparent, glossy lips and fake lashes for that bijoux touch at the outer corners.

Smatter bronzing powder or a liquid highlighter right below the cheekbones, along the jawline, neck bones and collar bone for that sexy, just-come-from-frolicking-inthe- French-Riviera appeal.

1. Milk – Opt for creamy or milk-based cleansers that have a smooth, velvety, mellifluous texture that are less harsh and infuse dry skin with hydration. We love Capture Totale Foaming Cleansing Milk, Dior
2. Foam – Foaming formulas that come in a mousse are non-drying, suit normal to oily skin and leave skin feeling squeaky clean. For supreme results try Mousse Confort Rich Foaming Cream Cleanser, Chanel
3. SOAP – Don’t discount bar soaps when choosing a cleanser—newfangled organic formulas pack natural ingredients that gently cleanse, sans chemicals. Our top pick – Bouquet Floral Face Soap, Melvita
4. CREAM – When shopping for a creamy cleanser, check if it’s a lotion-like cream, a foaming cream or a gel— foaming creams work for both dry and oily skin. Try a lightweight cream like Refreshing Cleansing Foam, Clé de Peau Beauté
5. BALM – Balms have a petroleum-jelly-like texture and are a gentle, mild way of lifting dirt and oil from pores for removing even the hardiest, stay-put eyeliner or mascara. We’ve tried and tested Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, Clinique with marvellous results
