CAN
YOUR COMPANY SAVE THE WORLD?
With
Earth in a decidedly more crucial state today,
it is heartening to note that corporate social
responsibility towards our environment is also
on the rise. But how effective are these programmers
and what important areas should these corporations
focus on?
TEXT
SHANTI GANESAN
Whether a recent
snowstorm in China, deemed one of the worst
to hit it in decades and resulting in thousands
of migrants stranded in the midst of travel
chaos for the Chinese New Year, had anything
at all to do with climate change is far from
certain. All we know is, we’ve read and heard
enough to realize that it’s time for drastic
change. Herein lies the r are recycling, changing
our bulbs and having compost heaps in our gardens
sufficient to reverse the kind of damage we’ve
done to Earth? Should we also ask how companies
that make millions, and have a dramatic impact
on the environment while they reap its resources,
are helping in sustaining our environment? Does
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) make a
difference and how much can it help our ailing
planet earth?
The world business
council Sustainable Development’s publication
Making Good Business Sense by Lord Holme and
Richard Watts, says that Corporate Social Responsibility
is “the continuing commitment by businesses
to behave ethically and contribute to economic
development while improving the quality of life
of the workforce and their families as well
as of the local community and society at large.”
Of course, this perception varies from country
to country but the ultimate goal of CSR.
