    Skin Deep

Tags:  June    Posted date:  June 6, 2011  |  No comment

Foundation is not a must-have; tinted moisturiser will do for a day at the beach, or if you have flawless skin and use the right skincare products to bring on a healthy, radiant glow, you could pass on foundation and go straight to lashings of mascara or a swoosh of blusher. But— and this is a big but—if you must wear foundation, for long days at work or on the go, as most of us do, then you have to get it right. When you’ve got it spot on, the right foundation will give you even toned, flawless-looking, radiant skin, and makes you look like you’re not wearing any foundation at all. As makeup maestro Pat McGrath puts it: “When the quality of the skin is perfect, you don’t need anything else. It’s natural, perfect beauty at its best.” In a nutshell: foundation should be an invisible layer that makes your skin look better than it did without the foundation, by hiding blemishes, bringing a healthy radiance to your complexion and sculpting a seamless look on your face, making your complexion look healthier and more alive. At worst, major foundation faux pas like choosing the wrong colour or coverage can look like a thick cake of makeup in the absolute wrong, ghastly shade. When shopping for foundation, keep in mind that the idea here is to select the correct shade and coverage to look naturally flawless, never made up. Read on to find out how you can choose the perfect shade, formulation, coverage and type of foundation for your skin.

    CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHADE

If you have yellow-based Asian skin, opt for foundations with warm or yellowish undertones.

To find the correct shade of foundation, use Bobbi Brown’s tried and tested technique: in natural light, apply a stripe of foundation from your cheek to your jaw line and gently blend it into your skin. The shade that disappears into your skin is the winner.

DON’T: Wearing a lighter shade of foundation in hopes of looking fairer simply does not work as it gives your face a sickish-grey tint. Celebrate your natural skin colour with a matching shade of foundation; you’ll look and feel more confident, less like a decomposing zombie and more like yourself.

    FORMULATIONS

    CREAM

    Normal to oily skin

A heavy, thick formula that absorbs oil and provides full coverage for acne or large pores.

    COMPACT

    All skin types

Cream to powder formulas that provide more matte coverage.

    LIQUID

    Combination to dry skin

Gives skin a dewy finish, complements the divine flawlessness of Asian skin.

    STICK

    Normal to dry skin

Provides full and easy spot coverage, a great alternative to concealer if you need to conceal blotchiness or blemishes.
